Beeswax advent candle - hand-dipped

BISTAD

BIS-20251

A classic beeswax advent candle
For many families, an advent candle is part of December. Each day, the candle burns down to the next number, creating a small, fixed moment in a busy time – at the breakfast table, when the children come home, or when the candles are lit in the evening.

This advent candle is slim and classic in shape with clear numbers from 1 to 24, and the golden colour of the beeswax suits both a simple Nordic table setting and a home full of Christmas decorations.

Danish beeswax from "Den Grønne Pulje"
The candle is made of pure beeswax collected from local beehives across Central Jutland, and the wax comes from "Den Grønne Pulje" (the Green Pool). Beeswax is the wax the bees use to build their honeycombs, and it is harvested together with the honey. The wax is firm and dense, so the candle holds its shape and burns calmly, and the natural colour may vary slightly from candle to candle.

Hand-dipped in Aarhus by BISTAD
The advent candle is hand-dipped by BISTAD in Aarhus. The wick is dipped again and again in melted beeswax until the candle has the right thickness, which gives it the slightly tapered shape you can see in the picture.

BISTAD is a social enterprise where the candles are made, among others, by people facing difficult life circumstances, and where there is always room for the imperfect – something we at the Okofamily are proud to support. Because the candles are handmade, there may be small variations from candle to candle. This has no effect on how the candle burns.

How to get the best burn from your advent candle

  • Trim the wick to approx. 5 mm before lighting. This keeps the flame calm and reduces soot.
  • Place the candle away from draughts so the flame stays still and the candle does not drip.
  • Put the candle out just before the next number, so the number is still easy to read the next day.
  • If a piece of wick falls into the melted wax, remove it once the candle is out and has cooled down.

Candle safety

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and put it out when you go to bed or leave the house.
  • Place the candle in a stable candle holder where children and pets cannot knock it over.
  • Keep it well away from curtains, Christmas decorations and anything else flammable.
  • Do not use lit candles in children's bedrooms.
  • Smother the flame instead of blowing the candle out, for example with a candle snuffer.

Beeswax advent candle - Pillar

BISTAD

BIS-20268

A sturdy beeswax advent candle
For many families, an advent candle is part of December. Each day, the candle burns down to the next number, creating a small, fixed moment in a busy time – at the breakfast table, when the children come home, or when the candles are lit in the evening.

This advent candle is thicker than a classic advent candle and shaped like a pillar candle. It stands steadily on its own and is perfect as the centrepiece of a Christmas arrangement with fir branches, pine cones and berries. The numbers from 1 to 24 are clear, and the golden colour of the beeswax suits both a simple Nordic table setting and a home full of Christmas decorations.

The wax is firm and dense, so the pillar candle holds its shape and burns calmly, and the natural colour may vary slightly from candle to candle.

Hand-cast in Aarhus by BISTAD
The advent candle is cast by hand at BISTAD in Aarhus. The melted beeswax is poured into a mould around the wick, and once the wax has set, the numbers 1 to 24 are printed on.

  • Place the candle away from draughts so the flame stays still and the wax melts evenly.
  • Put the candle out just before the next number, so the number is still easy to read the next day.
  • If the candle burns a hole in the centre, gently press the soft edge in towards the middle while the wax is still warm.
  • If a piece of wick falls into the melted wax, remove it once the candle is out and has cooled down.

Candle safety

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and put it out when you go to bed or leave the house.
  • Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface where children and pets cannot knock it over.
  • Keep it well away from curtains, Christmas decorations and anything else flammable – including branches and pine cones in a centrepiece.
  • Do not use lit candles in children's bedrooms.
  • Smother the flame instead of blowing the candle out, for example with a candle snuffer.
