Small Architects - 20 Cork Building Blocks

Korko

KOR-85231

Safe, sensory, and durable
Cork is a unique material that combines safety with a fantastic tactile experience. The blocks are made from cork harvested from cork oaks that regenerate naturally, making it a responsible choice with great respect for nature.

  • Toxin-free toys: Cork is naturally hypoallergenic and completely free from harmful chemicals, so children can safely build away.

  • Sensory toys: The unique texture of these cork toys provides a pleasant surface that stimulates the child's sense of touch and offers a good grip.

  • Durable play: The natural resilience of cork ensures that these cork blocks can withstand years of active play.

Note: As cork is a natural product, small pieces may loosen over time. This is completely normal and does not affect the function of the toy.

Care and maintenance

To best preserve the building blocks, they should be kept dry and stored indoors. Cleaning is easily done with a damp cloth – avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasives. It is also recommended to avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, as it can cause the material to fade or become brittle.

Feeding trough - Wooden figure in beech wood

Wood & Care

WAC-11655

Room for imagination
A feeding trough is indispensable on any farm. This simple trough invites the child to expand their play and care for the animals. Is it filled with fresh water, hay, or perhaps invisible apples? That is entirely up to the child's imagination in the moment.

The conscious choice of a simple expression leans on the aesthetics known from the Waldorf tradition, where accessories support open-ended play without dictating it. The trough is beautifully shaped, and the dark colour creates a nice contrast to the farm's many light-coloured animals and figures.

Handmade and completely unique
The feeding trough is carved in solid beech wood in a small family-owned workshop in Poland. The wood's natural grain clearly stands out through the dark colour, giving each individual trough its very own unique character.

Since everything is made by hand, there will always be small differences from trough to trough. The robust design and the 1.9 cm thick profile ensure that it stands stably on the play mat, in the barn, or on a nature table.

Cow - Wooden figure in beech wood

Wood & Care

WAC-11754

Room for imagination
Toys do not need to be painted down to the smallest detail. This cow only has the most necessary features painted on – such as the black spots, the udder, and the snout.

The conscious choice to avoid full painting leans on the aesthetics known from the Waldorf tradition, where a simple expression lets the child use their own imagination. Is the cow happy and wants to go for a walk, or is it standing still and chewing its cud? That is entirely up to the game in the moment.

Handmade and completely unique
The figure is carved in solid beech wood in a small family-owned workshop in Poland. Because the wood is primarily untreated, the natural wood grain clearly stands out on the entire figure.

Since each animal is made and painted by hand, there will always be small differences from cow to cow. The 1.7 cm thick figure stands stably on its own and can easily be included in a woodland scene, a farm environment, or on a nature table.

Woodland small world set with hare and hedgehog

Wood & Care

WAC-11686

Toys without a pre-written story
Most play sets tell the child what should happen. This one does not. There are no included rules, no correct setup and no specific game. The hare can live under the trees, the hedgehog can hide behind one of them – or they can both move out onto the floor and become part of something completely different. It is the child who decides.

The base gathers the forest, but does not bind it
The set consists of six pieces: a base of 21 x 15 cm, three trees measuring approximately 11.5 x 8 cm each, a hare of 5 x 5 cm and a hedgehog of 5 x 3 cm. The base provides a place for the play to happen, but the trees stand on their own and do not need to be inserted into holes or grooves. The forest can therefore be built wherever the child wants – and packed away again afterwards.

For the nature table
A nature table is a shelf or table in the home that follows the course of the year. In spring, there might be shoots and bird feathers, in autumn chestnuts and leaves – and in between a few wooden figures that tie it all together. The children help gather and rearrange, and in this way, the table becomes a quiet marker that the season has changed.

The tradition originates from Waldorf education, where in German it is called a Jahreszeitentisch. A set like this can remain standing all year round, while what you gather outside is changed around it.

Handmade in solid beech wood
Each set is made of solid beech wood in a small Polish family-owned workshop and made by hand from sketch to colour. Therefore, both the colour shades and the wood grain vary slightly from set to set. This is not a flaw, but the consequence of each piece being made individually – and the reason why no two sets are exactly alike.

Safety and materials
The set is CE-marked and manufactured in accordance with the EU Toy Safety Directive. It is tested according to EN 71-1 (mechanical and physical properties) and EN 71-2 (flammability) at an accredited laboratory, and the test was conducted in the strictest age category. The paint is a water-based acrylic paint tested according to EN 71-3 – the standard for toys.

Learning Leaves - Montessori-inspired cork stacking toy

Learning Leaves - Montessori-inspired cork stacking toy

Korko

KOR-85064

Three pegs, six leaves
The base has three pegs, and they are not the same length. The shortest takes one leaf, the middle one two and the tallest three. The leaves are shaped as leaves, with a fine vein printed on the side, and they come in two colours - the brown ones in the cork's own tone and the green ones dyed through.

For a child of eighteen months the first task is a practical one: getting the block onto the peg. It is harder than it looks, and that is exactly what trains the grip. The numbers come later, when the child starts to notice that one peg takes more than another.

The child does the correcting
If the child tries to put a fourth leaf on the tallest peg, it will not go - there is no room. Nobody has to say anything. The mistake shows itself, and the child can put it right without having done anything wrong.

That principle is called "control of error", and it is one of the cornerstones of Montessori teaching: the material is built so that it tells you itself whether the answer is right. That is why we call the toy Montessori-inspired - not because it carries a seal, but because that is how it is designed.

More happens than counting
While the blocks go on, there is something to talk about. What colour is that one? How many now? Which peg has the most? It is often in small exchanges over a piece of toy that the words arrive - and they arrive more easily when the child has something in their hands at the time.

Why cork
Cork is light and soft, so the blocks fall without making a noise or doing any damage when the tower topples. The surface is textured without being rough and feels warmer to the touch than wood - a different feel in the hand from most of the other materials in a toy box.

Cork is the bark of the cork oak. It is stripped from the trunk every few years, and the bark grows back - the tree is not felled. It is one of the few raw materials harvested from a living tree without the tree being lost.

From 18 months
The manufacturer states the toy from 18 months. It is worth following: the age relates to the size of the blocks and to what a child at that stage can manage with their hands.

Looking after it
Cork does not take being left in water. Wipe dirt off with a damp cloth rather than rinsing the blocks, and let them dry before putting them away. Store the toy indoors and out of direct sunlight - over time, sunlight makes cork fade and turn brittle. Avoid cleaning products containing abrasives.

Birch tree with two birds - handmade in beech wood

Wood & Care

WAC-11693

Do I need a nature table to use the tree?
No. The tree works just as well on the floor in a game, on a windowsill or together with other wooden figures. The nature table is just one of the ways it is used – and if you do not know the concept, you can safely skip it.

How do you start a nature table?
It is simpler than most people think. There is no right way, and it does not have to be a table or look like in pictures. A shelf, a tray or a windowsill is enough. Start with a trip outside, where the child gathers a few things – chestnuts, leaves, stones – and display them together with a figure or two. Then it builds itself from there.

Where in the home should it be?
A place where you already spend time, so it is seen and touched. Many place it close to the front door, precisely because it then becomes natural to bring finds inside from the walk. A table in a room nobody uses ends up as a decoration.

What is changed, and what remains?

What you gather outside is changed according to the season – flowers in spring, shells in summer, chestnuts and leaves in autumn. Wooden figures like this usually remain standing all year round, while the rest moves around them. This is also what makes the change clear to the child.

Is it for play or for decoration?
Both, and ideally at the same time. The point of a nature table is that the child is allowed to touch the things and move them around – not that it has to look nice. The birds on this tree can easily move down to the floor, join in a completely different game and come back afterwards.

What paint is used on the tree?
The tree is painted with a water-based acrylic paint.

How do I clean the tree?
Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry. Do not soak it in water – wood absorbs water and can warp, and the paint cannot withstand it. If something greasy gets on it, a drop of mild washing-up liquid on the cloth will do the trick.

Handmade wooden farm - incl. ladder and fences

WAC-11600

The heart of farm play
With this large, spacious, and handmade wooden farm, imaginative play truly takes flight. The ground floor features fine little stalls for the farm's wooden animals and a beautiful barn door, while the included ladder provides access to the large hayloft.

The four fences can be moved around and used to build an enclosure outside. It is the ideal starting point for learning about farm life through play.

The open design and the conscious choice to avoid excessive colours make this a true Waldorf-inspired toy. Here, the simple aesthetics support the child's imagination rather than dictating it. Are the horses in the stable for the night, or are the hens going up to the loft to build a nest? Only the child's imagination sets the limits.

Handcrafted quality for generations
The farm is made in a small Polish family-owned workshop, and is solidly handcrafted in solid beech wood and carefully sanded. This means that all surfaces and edges are completely smooth, and as a CE-approved wooden toy, it is safe and comfortable for small hands to play with.

The light wood contrasts beautifully with the dark brown roof, and the natural grain of the wood stands out clearly, making every single farm completely unique.

This wooden farm is the perfect base for our large selection of wooden farm animals from Wood & Care. Please note that the animals and figures are sold separately, allowing you to curate exactly the family and flock of animals you would like to live on the farm.

Frieda's tractor - wooden toy with cork stacking blocks

Korko

KOR-85149

First a tractor, then a tower
The blocks sit loosely on two pegs on the base, and that is where the play is. They can be stacked in the order they came in or in a completely different one, and shared between the two pegs however the child likes - and for a child of eighteen months, getting the block onto the peg is a task in itself. Once the tower is up, the tractor can be pushed along, and then the whole thing falls over and you start again.

Frieda the fox is printed on one of the blocks, and she is there for a reason: once there is a character in a toy, the tractor is no longer just a tractor but a tractor with a driver who is going somewhere. That is what gets a two-year-old talking while she plays.

The cork tyres are what you notice
Cork is light, soft and sound-absorbing, and that is why the tractor does not clatter across a wooden floor the way plastic wheels do. It is also a material children respond to with their fingers - the surface is textured without being rough, and it feels warmer to the touch than wood.

Where the cork comes from
Cork is the bark of the cork oak. It is stripped from the trunk every few years, and the bark grows back - the tree is not felled. It is one of the few raw materials harvested from a living tree without the tree being lost.

From 18 months
The manufacturer states the tractor from 18 months. It is worth following: the age relates to the size of the blocks and to what a child at that stage can manage with their hands.

Looking after it
Cork does not take being left in water. Wipe dirt off with a damp cloth rather than rinsing the tractor, and let it dry before putting it away. Store it indoors and out of direct sunlight - over time, sunlight makes cork fade and turn brittle. Avoid cleaning products containing abrasives.
