Description

Pink menstrual cup from MonthlyCup - 43 ml
MonthlyCup Plus is the largest of the three menstrual cups and holds a full 43 ml - almost double that of Normal. It measures 47 mm in diameter, is 55 mm long, without the stem.

Plus is relevant if you usually change more often than every three hours on the heaviest days - not just when you are on the toilet anyway. If you do not have that need, Normal is probably a better start. Read the size guide if you are unsure about the right size for you.

The menstrual cup is produced in Sweden from soft medical grade silicone, and can be used for up to five years. Five years corresponds to about 65 periods. If you use 20-25 disposable products per period, one cup thus replaces approx. 1300-1600 products.

How a menstrual cup works
A menstrual cup collects the blood instead of absorbing it, the way a tampon or a pad does. The same cup can be emptied, rinsed and used again - cycle after cycle for up to five years. If the cup sits correctly, it is leak-proof, and you can sleep, train and swim as normal.

The material
The cup is made of medical grade silicone. Silicone is produced from silicon, which is extracted from sand. These cups are pink and therefore contain up to 1% vegan pigment paste; the rest is medical grade silicone.

The routine: fold, insert, empty, repeat

Wash hands and fold the cup. Press it together into a C. The C-fold is the most common to start with, but there are others, and most eventually find one that works best.
Insert it, and let it unfold. The cup must sit completely inside the vagina, below the cervix. Feel around the base and check that it has unfolded.
Empty according to your flow. Most people only need to empty it twice a day. If you have a heavy period, it must be done more often. Check more frequently in the beginning until you know your flow.
Break the vacuum before you take it out. Gently pinch the base so the suction releases, and then take it out slowly. Do not pull on the stem alone.

Never leave the cup in for more than 12 hours
12 hours is the absolute limit, regardless of how little you bleed. Take the cup out, clean it, and put it back in. This is the single most important rule when using a menstrual cup, and it relates to the section below.

Good to know about TSS
Toxic shock syndrome is a very rare but serious condition that can occur in connection with menstruation. It is linked to bacteria that can multiply when menstrual blood sits stagnant in the body for a long time - and this is why the 12-hour limit exists.

If you suddenly get a high fever and feel very unwell while using the cup, take it out and seek medical advice.

The risk is small, and it becomes smaller when you wash your hands before every handling, stick to the 12-hour limit and clean the cup as described. But it is worth knowing before you start - not afterwards.

Cleaning

Before first use: boil the cup.
At each emptying: wash hands, empty the cup, and rinse it with mild soap and water before putting it back in.
Before or after each period: boil the cup again. If you cannot boil it in a pot, there are microwave bags for this purpose.
Twice a year: cleaning tablets remove discolouration. MonthlyCup's own tablets are based on sodium percarbonate and vegetable binders.

Let the cup dry completely, and store it in a breathable place. Replace the cup if the silicone becomes damaged, sticky or noticeably changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a menstrual cup from your first period?
Yes. Mini is made for the first years. It can take a few tries to find the right technique, and that is completely normal - if you are unsure, talk to an adult you trust, or with your doctor.

Can you sleep with the cup in?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest advantages of a cup: most can put it in before bedtime and empty it in the morning without having to get up during the night. Just remember that the 12 hours count from when you put it in - not from when you get up.

What do you do in public toilets?
Empty the cup into the toilet, wipe it with toilet paper, and put it back in. Rinse it the next time you are somewhere with a sink. Most can last for many hours at a time and therefore rarely need to empty it while out.

What if I can't get it out?
Squat down and push down with your stomach muscles - this moves the cup downwards. Then find the base and pinch so the vacuum releases. The cup cannot disappear up into the body; the vagina is closed at the top by the cervix. Never pull hard on the stem alone.

The stem bothers me - what do I do?
Usually, this means the cup is sitting too low. First try pushing it a bit further up, and check that it has unfolded completely. If that doesn't help, the stem on many cups can be shortened - but only do this if MonthlyCup's own instructions allow it, and never cut into the cup itself.

Can I use a pad at the same time?
Yes, and many do this for the first few periods until they have found the routine. It takes the uncertainty out of the learning period.

Does the pink cup become discoloured over time?
Silicone can develop a tint over time, regardless of colour - this is normal and does not affect the function. Cleaning tablets a couple of times a year remove most of it. If, on the other hand, the cup has become sticky or changed texture, it must be replaced.

Can the cup be used after childbirth?
Yes. MonthlyCup's sizes are divided according to flow, not according to whether you have given birth, so there is no separate "post-childbirth" model. Wait to use the cup until the postpartum bleeding is over, and ask your midwife or doctor if you are unsure about the timing.
