The function of beeswax in creams and salves
In homemade cosmetics, beeswax functions primarily as a thickener and an emulsifier. It helps bind oil and water together in emulsions, ensuring a stable and even consistency in your products.
-
For salves: Beeswax provides firmness. The more wax, the firmer the salve.
-
For lip balms: Ensures that the stick holds its shape and stays on the lips for long-lasting protection.
Natural care and protection
Beeswax is rich in Vitamin A, which plays a role in skin cell renewal. Additionally, the substance has natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help soothe irritated skin, redness, and minor skin abrasions.
However, the primary benefit of beeswax is its ability to lay as a thin, protective film on the skin. This film acts as a shield against environmental influences such as frost, wind, and dry air, while simultaneously "locking" moisture inside the skin. Since the wax does not penetrate the skin or block pores, the skin can still breathe freely.
Safety and application
Although honey is advised against for infants due to the risk of botulism spores, this does not apply to cosmetic beeswax. This granulate has undergone a heating and purification process that eliminates harmful bacteria.
Beeswax is not absorbed by the human organism; upon ingestion, it simply passes through the digestive system. This makes it a safe choice in products for lips and for the care of small children, e.g., diaper balm or cold cream.

Carnauba wax is a plant-based wax which is also the hardest, natural wax available.
It is extracted from the leaves of the palm tree Copernicia Cerifera, which grows in Brazil. It consists of wax esters (85%), free fatty acids, fatty alcohols and resins (15%).
The wax comes as yellow flakes/powder and it only has a very faint smell.
It is a vegan alternative to beeswax and can, among other things, used to make creams, pomades and ointments. One of its good properties is that it is emollient and moisturizing in skin care products.
Carnauba wax is somewhat harder than beeswax and therefore the recipes for what you have to make have to be adjusted down a bit. beeswax if you replace it with it.
The wax has a melting point of 80°-85°
You can also use carnauba wax to make vegan beeswax paper. See how to do it here in our guide
