Guide to absorbency levels
How does it actually work?
The “magic” comes from the fabric layers sewn into the gusset. Hala Collective has worked extremely hard to deliver excellent absorption without synthetic polyester fabrics next to your skin and has designed different gusset lengths to match your body’s needs. The various knicker styles come in a range of absorbency levels, so there’s an option for any day of your cycle, whatever stage of life you’re in.
Absorbency levels
Choosing the right absorbency isn’t rocket science, but it can be a bit confusing at first. A good place to start is to track your current use of menstrual products. How often do you empty a full menstrual cup, or how many pads, tampons or liners do you use across your cycle? Compare this with our absorbency explanations below.
In the beginning, it can feel safest to choose a slightly higher absorbency while you learn to trust that the underwear truly protects against leaks. For most people, our Moderate Absorbency is actually sufficient even on heavy days. It can be a good idea to buy a couple of different absorbency levels and test them on different days. That way you can gently ease into the underwear and get a clearer sense of which absorbency suits you on which days.
Ultimately, every body is different, and your absorbency needs will likely change over time – only you know what feels right.
To help you get started, Hala Collective has created the overview below of their absorbency levels. If anything is unclear, please feel free to reach out with your questions.
| Variants | Drops | ml | Comparison |
| Super Light | 0 | 0 | 1 panty liner |
| Light | 1 | 5 | 1 tampon/pad |
| Moderate | 3 | 10-15 | 2-3 tampons/pads |
| Super | 4 | 20-25 | 4-5 tampons/pads |
| Super Plus | 5 | 30-35 | 6-7 tampons/pads |
Super Light Absorbency is for regular dry days or days with discharge. There is no membrane in the gusset at this level, because Super Light is made for days when you’d otherwise wear ordinary underwear. The difference? We’ve designed the gusset long enough to actually absorb discharge, and short enough to keep the knickers feeling like normal underwear (just better and drier).
Light Absorbency is for the days leading up to your period, for “is-my-period-over-yet?” days, for days with heavier discharge, or as backup when using a menstrual cup or tampon. Essentially, it’s the revolutionary knicker with a built-in liner: everything stays put, nothing bunches or folds, and there’s no adhesive sticking to your skin.
You quite literally feel like you’re wearing ordinary knickers. There’s no bulky gusset; the thin fabric layers sewn into the gusset keep you dry and prevent bleeding or leaking through. We love this absorbency because it works for so many different days of the month.
Moderate Absorbency is actually enough for most people, even on heavy days. Track your current product use and compare it with our guide to see whether Moderate is sufficient for you or if you need more protection. Moderate is also suitable for light to moderate stress incontinence.
Super Absorbency is perfect for very heavy days, for night-time, postpartum, and for light to moderate stress incontinence.
Super Plus Absorbency offers extra-high absorbency and an extra-long gusset (all the way to the waist front and back) plus a membrane sewn on the inner thighs for greater security when lying down. They’re tailored to give you a good night’s sleep at any time of the month. This level is also great postpartum.
