How to remove odours with baking soda from shoes to litter trays and carpets

Home odours can be difficult to get rid of, especially when they settle in shoes, mattresses, carpets or the litter box. Instead of using fragrance sprays or products that mask the smell with perfume, baking soda can be used to neutralise the odour completely.

Baking soda binds to the acidic molecules that create bad odours and makes them neutral. The result? A fresher and cleaner home, without unnecessary additives.

Use baking soda to remove odours in shoes and boots

Shoes can quickly start to smell, especially sports shoes and winter boots. Here's how to do it:

  • Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda into each shoe.

  • Shake the shoe lightly to distribute it.

  • Leave it overnight.

  • Shake out the baking soda or vacuum the next morning.

You can repeat this regularly, especially in the shoes you wear every day.

Neutralise litter box odour with baking soda

The litter box is a classic source of odours in the home. Baking soda can help:

  • Dry a thin layer of baking soda in the bottom of the tray before adding cat litter.

  • Dry a little baking soda over the used litter during the week.

It helps absorb ammonia odour and makes it more comfortable for both cat and human.

Fresh up mattresses and carpets with baking soda

Mattresses, carpets and pillows can accumulate odours over time. Use baking soda as follows:

  • Drizzle a even layer over the surface.

  • Leave it on for at least 30-60 minutes – preferably longer.

  • Please vacuum thoroughly afterwards.

Tip: Test on a small corner first if you are unsure if the fabric can withstand it.

Remove bad odours in the fridge

The fridge can easily pick up odours from fish, cheese or leftover food. Try this trick:

  • Place a small bowl with 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda in the back of the fridge.

  • Replace every 3-4 weeks.

  • Alternatively: wipe the fridge shelves with a damp cloth dipped in baking soda water.

You'll avoid odours without affecting the food.
