The big cleaning guide

The big cleaning guide

Environmentally friendly cleaning

We can't all do it all, but we can all do something when it comes to taking care of the environment.

Therefore, we would like to give you a lot of tips and tricks on how you can make cleaning your home greener. Because you don't need strong and chemical-filled cleaning agents to get rid of limescale, bacteria and stubborn dirt.

There are a lot of natural alternatives that are good for both you and the environment.

We have collected them here, in our large green cleaning guide with lots of tips for environmentally friendly cleaning.

We hope you will be inspired. If you have questions or wishes for other things we could write about in the guide, then you must contact us.

Sustainable cleaning

Save on plastic packaging – mix your own cleaning agents
Many of our cleaning products today are based on water and in plastic packaging. But it is hard on the climate that we transport water around the country and the world. And we use far too much plastic packaging, which can be dispensed with. In fact, 1 truckload of cleaning agent from Nuuii is equivalent to 121 trucks full of liquid cleaning agents!
Cleaning agents in concentrated form are the solution.

And we have plenty of them!

Nuuii has developed some of them.

Nuuii’s cleaning agents come in powder form, which you mix up with water yourself. We recommend that you simply mix in the spray bottle you already have, but you can also buy a loose bottle here.

The powder is available in 3 versions which are mixed with water and poured into a spray bottle – see them above.

But nuuii has also developed a cleaning powder that you can mix into warm water – exactly like all other universal cleaners. It also comes in a small paper bag and is enough for 30 liters of water.

You can also use the cleaning powder from Norwegian På Stell. It does not contain any water either. It is such an all-in-one cleaning agent that you can actually use for both cleaning and laundry. This bag contains 500 gr., so you have detergent for many, many years.

Natural oven cleaning

The place in the home where the most stubborn dirt can get stuck is the oven.
There are plenty of chemical remedies to remedy, but here are our very best tips on how to make your oven sparkling clean – without harming yourself or the environment.

Clean your oven with lemon
For easy cleaning of the oven, you can put a dish of water and a cut lemon into the oven. Set the oven to 50 degrees and let it heat for about half an hour. It will dissolve the bit of grease and dirt in the oven and make it easier to wipe away.

This method is good to use continuously, so you avoid your oven getting too dirty. However, it is only for easy cleaning.

Clean your oven with brown soap
A good old trick is cleaning the oven in brown soap.
Smear the oven in brown soap and let it ”soak” overnight.
It will dissolve much of the stubborn dirt that may be in the oven.

This brown soap is made from olive oil and is super good for the purpose.

However, the brown soap is very concentrated, so remember to use good cleaning gloves made of natural rubber, such as these.
Be sure to get all the brown soap off after soaking. That in itself is quite a task, so the solution with the brown soap must be said to be for the very dedicated cleaning types.

Clean the oven with scouring cream
The most effective way to clean the oven if it is badly affected is actually to use this scrubbing cream from Ulrich Natürlich. It contains wiener lime, which scrubs and polishes completely without scratching. You just have to spread the scrubbing cream on the desired area and then scrub with a sponge – e.g. this one, which has a rough and a soft side. If something is extra firmly stuck, you can also just give it a go with the copper sponge here. And then you simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth – done!

See below how effective it is.

Clean your oven with baking soda
Another good trick for cleaning your oven is to use plain baking soda – mixed with vinegar (roughly 1:1, if you can call it that with powder and liquid).
Make a paste of baking soda and vinegar and grease the oven with it.
Let the paste sit for a few hours – or maybe even overnight and dry off. You can use a copper sponge, like this one to loosen the most stubborn dirt.
Make sure to dry everything well before using the oven again.

It is important that the paste is allowed to work for a long time. So this method requires a little patience.

Rcleaning of baking pans and the oven rack
Soak your baking pans in warm soapy water.
After this, you can easily get rid of stubborn dirt with a copper sponge like this one.

The oven rack itself is often made of stainless steel. So you can easily put it in the dishwasher. Or clean it like the frying pan.

Cleaning of mirrors

There is a sea of cleaning agents for mirrors. And for many, mirror cleaner is just something you have.
But have you ever tried cleaning your mirror with water and a clean cloth?
We do – and it therefore works exactly as well. And then we also save a little on cleaning agents, which are not necessarily needed.

Natural drain cleaner

Your drains can easily get blocked, so here you get our best advice on how to keep them clean and avoid blockages.
Avoid chemical drain cleaners and the like, which can be harmful to both drains and the environment.
In the kitchen, be careful not to pour oil or grease down your sink. Both parts can harden and can stop your drain.
If the drain is stopped, you can first of all empty the water trap. It sits under the sink and that will often be where the plug is.
Feel free to use boiling water to loosen the grease plug if it cannot be removed in the water trap. Keep pouring boiling water into the sink until the water runs through.
And if you happen to have a Bokashi compost bin, the liquid from the composting can actually also be used as a fairly effective – and completely natural – drain cleaner. Read more here.

Good equipment for cleaning

Use sponges and cloths that do not release microplastics into the aquatic environment.
The microplastic is released every single time you wash the sponges and cloths in the washing machine.
Cloths should ideally be made of organic cotton. We have quite a few of them here.

For stubborn dirt, we have several types of copper sponges and other scrubbers.

And even if you use environmentally friendly cleaning products, it can be very nice to use gloves for some tasks. There are also environmentally friendly alternatives here. Both in a disposable version, if necessary, or in a more durable version.

And then there is all the other stuff that needs to be used for cleaning. We have a large category of equipment that, among other things, counts brushes, rags, brooms, buckets and sweeping trays. Because the whole thing is made of wood, metal and other natural materials.

You can find all our cleaning supplies here.
